Growing the Kuruma Prawn will not be easy! However, that is a benefit because it creates a market barrier to others.

The following issues had to be overcome:

A. The Species is nocturnal: This raises challenges. They require a sandy bottom as their habitat to bury into during daylight hours. Our raceway design caters for this need.

B. The species is a bottom dweller: This limits stocking densities i.e. Overstock and mortalities will result; understocking affects the financial bottom line. Again, ph and DO levels need to be maintained. Our Management Technology systems address these issues.

C. Food requirements: The Kuruma prawn requires a high protein diet. Whilst there is food available from Taiwan, it is a compromise at best. A new food source has to be found. One that meets their exact needs. The C.S.I.R.O. will solve this problem with a new recipe which is being exclusively developed FOR Capricornia Prawns by the C.S.I.R.O.

D. Slow growers: In the wild and in traditional farms, Kuruma prawns take a year to grow to harvest weight - which is unprofitable. Our genetics programme together with our proprietary feed, biofloc and proprietary oxygenation system deliver faster growth that is profitable.

E. The Japanese want different sized prawns: In Australia, we tend to think "big" is better. The Japanese think the opposite.

F. Stress: Prawns, and the Kuruma prawn in particular, are easily stressed - which can be deadly. This is why they are nocturnal. Our Farm is designed so that there is very little noise and at a level that will not cause prawn stress.
